  • Spotlight: Entrepreneur - Henry Ford
Henry Ford is my personal favorite entrepreneur. Not only did he revolutionize the way we would move about, but he also revolutionized a completely new way of life by paying his employees well, so well, that they could afford to buy the new automobiles they were creating. He also demonstrated the power of the factory assembly line that Ransom E. Olds of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company invented to produce these vehicles cheaply and in mass quantity, thus enabling most Americans to afford to buy his product. These innovations contributed to the vast manufacturing power of the United States that enabled it to win two world wars.

Henry Ford, an iconic figure in American history, was born on July 30, 1863, on a farm in Springwells Township, Michigan. His father, William Ford, was an immigrant from Ireland, and his mother, Mary Litogot, was of Irish and English descent. Young Henry displayed an early fascination with mechanics, often spending his free time tinkering with machinery.

In 1879, at the age of 16, Ford left home to pursue an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. He worked at various companies, including James F. Flower & Brothers and the Detroit Dry Dock Company. After completing his apprenticeship, he returned to the family farm but continued to work on steam engines and occasionally in Detroit factories.

In 1888, Ford married Clara Bryant, a neighbor's daughter. They had one child, Edsel Ford, who would later become president of the Ford Motor Company.

Ford's passion for automobiles led him to build his first gasoline-powered vehicle, the Quadricycle, in 1896. This significant achievement marked the beginning of his journey towards revolutionizing the automotive industry.
In 1903, Ford founded the Ford Motor Company with a group of investors, including his friend and mentor, Thomas Edison. The company's initial focus was on producing high-quality, affordable automobiles. However, it was the introduction of the Model T in 1908 that truly catapulted Ford to fame. The Model T, with its innovative assembly line production process, made automobiles accessible to the middle class. Ford's assembly line, which significantly reduced production time and cost, became a model for industrial efficiency worldwide. Ford's success brought him immense wealth and influence. He used his resources to establish the Ford Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to social and educational causes. He also became a controversial figure due to his anti-Semitic views and labor practices. Henry Ford passed away on April 7, 1947, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures in American history. His innovative spirit and commitment to affordability transformed the automobile industry and shaped the modern world.
